  Hetrick, Harvin & Bonds awards two $1000 scholarships to graduating high school seniors who are residents of Colleton County and who have shown scholastic ability, leadership and a commitment to the community.  Deadline is April 15th.  Applications are available in the guidance office. 
  The Structural Association of SC Hilton Head Chapter offers a $1000 award to a high school senior who plans to enter an engineering program.  Preference is given to a student who plans to enter a civil engineering or civil engineering technology program.  Guidelines and applications are in the guidance office.  
  Senior Cap and Gown pictures will be taken on April 14th in the gym at the beginning of the day.  All students should wear appropriate shoes and it is suggested that the boys wear dark slacks.  Seniors will receive their caps and gowns the week of March 22nd. Please hang the gowns so the wrinkles can fall out before picture day!  We will send out picture packets as soon as we receive them. 
  The SC State Fair offers 50 $2000 scholarships for graduating seniors who plan to attend a SC university, college or technical college.  More information can be found at www.scstatefair.org.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  The deadline for application is March 19th. 
  The deadline for the June 12 ACT is May 7th.  
  The Rufus C. Barkley Scholarship is available to students who are residents of Berkeley, Charleston, Colleton and Dorchester counties.  This is a $10,000 scholarship award, renewable for each four years of college.  Financial need and academic record may be considered, but the principal criteria are character, a history of reaching out to others, well-rounded interests, and concern for those less fortunate.  Applications are available in the guidance office.  
  The May 1st SAT will be administered at Colleton County High School.  The registration deadline has been extended to March 30th.  The deadline for the June 5th SAT is April 29th.   
  Got milk?  Senior scholar/athletes are encouraged to apply to win a $7500 scholarship through the 2010 Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Awards  and USA Today at www.bodybymilk.com.  Application deadline is March 5, 2010.  
  Palmetto Rural Telephone Cooperative (PRTC) offers a one-time scholarship worth $2500 in partnership with the Foundation for Rural Service (FRS).  This scholarship is targeted for good students who plan to attend college, have at least a C average, and who express an interest to return to a rural community following graduation from college.  This scholarship is not based solely upon GPA.  Applications may be picked up in the guidance office or downloaded at http://www.frs.org.  Completed applications should be returned to PRTC no later than February 22, 2010.  
  Application for the Sam Walton Community Scholarship is encouraged for seniors who have a 2.5 GPA, have taken the SAT or ACT, and plan to attend a 2- or 4-year college in fall 2010.  The scholarship committee will consider financial need, academic achievement, and school and community activities and leadership. This one-time $3,000 award is funded through the WalMart Foundation.  Seniors may apply at http://www.act.org/walmart/community.  Deadline is January 29, 2010.  
  The Kitty M. Fairey Educational Fund Scholarship is available to high school seniors who have a 3.0, a combined SAT of 1800 (CR, M, and W), parent income under $40,000, and acceptance to a four year college in Fall 2010.  Deadline to apply is January 4, 2010.  Apply at www.wachoviascholars.com
  The SC Junior Golf Foundation offers a scholarship to seniors who plan to attend a four year college next year, have a 2.75, and have a competitive or recreational interest in golf.  Interested applicants can apply at www.scholarshipprograms.org.  Deadline is January 4, 2010.
  The Foundation for Rural Education and Development sponsors Leadership through Learning, a one week, all expense paid trip to Washington DC to learn about government, civic affairs and telecommunications regulation the week of April 11-16.  Eligible students must be juniors or seniors, have a "B" average and show a commitment to their community and school through participation in activities.  Interested?  See Mrs. Carter.
  The Elks 2010 Most Valuable Student Scholarship application can be found at www.elks.org/enf/scholars.  Mrs. Carter also has copies in her office.  The application must be submitted to the local Elks Lodge by November 2nd.  Students can compete for national scholarship money as well as money awarded by the local Elks Lodge.  See Mrs. Carter for more details.  
  The deadline to sign up for the January 23 SAT is December 15th! 
  The Burger King Scholars program awards scholarships to seniors who have at least a 2.5 GPA, work at least part time, are actively involved in community service, demonstrate financial need, and plan to enroll in a two or four year college or university.  To learn more, go to the web site at http://www.haveityourwayfoundation.org/

  The FAFSA website can be found at www.fafsa.ed.gov and the website to obtain your Federal Student Aid PIN is www.pin.ed.gov.  
  The United States Senate hosts Academy Day on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia.  Students can learn more about our nation's service academies, including the US Air Force Academy, US Coast Guard, US Merchant Marines, US Military Academy, and the US Naval Academy.  See Mrs. Carter to register, if interested. 
  The last day for DROP/ADD is September 4th!
   

All students who participate in at least one Varsity sport and have an overall "B" average are encouraged to apply for the 2009 WENDY'S HIGH SCHOOL HEISMAN Award.  Go to www.wendysheisman.com, click on Students/Parents and "Apply Now".  The deadline is October 1, 2009.  The school code is 412045 and my email is mtcarter@colletonprep.org.  I will be glad to assist you with this application.  

 

 

Motivated, dedicated, involved high school seniors are eligible to apply for a scholarship through the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.  A minimum 3.0 GPA at the end of your junior year is required.  The deadline is October 31.  For additional information, go to www.coca-colascholars.org. or see Mrs. Carter.

   

All Juniors and Seniors are encouraged to attend the College Ed-Op program at the National Guard Armory in October.  The purpose of Ed-Op is to provide an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to be exposed to the many types of post-secondary educational opportunities. Look for new information soon!

 

  If you are applying to CLEMSON UNIVERSITY:  the online application can be found at www.clemson.edu.  The application fee is $60.00.  If you apply by December 1, you should receive a decision the week of February 15.  
 

VERY IMPORTANT!! 

If you apply on-line to a college, it is your responsibility to print off the counselor report form and turn it in to Mrs. Carter in the guidance office.

  Duke University will hold an Open house on Saturday, September 12th from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM on the Duke campus.  For additional information, go to www.admissions.duke.edu.  
  Hilton Head Christian Academy will host a National Christian College Fair on Friday October 9th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at their school.  To see a list of the participating colleges, go to www.nccf.us and click on "National Christian College Fairs".
 

Several universities (USC, Clemson, College of Charleston) have partnerships with technical schools which enable a student to transfer into their program after two years of study.  To learn more, stop by the guidance office. 

 

Anderson University (formerly Anderson College) offers application fee waivers if you go on a campus visit.

 

 

An online student guide to South Carolina private 2-year and 4-year institutions is available through South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, Inc. at www.scicu.org.  This guide has excellent information on private schools, financial aid, and scholarships.  Check it out!

 

 

Coker College and Charleston Southern University offer FREE applications if you apply online!  For more information, see Mrs. Carter in the Guidance Office.

 

 

The SC Teaching Fellows Program provides up to $6000 per year for four years for students completing a degree leading to teacher certification.  Recipients must agree to teach in a SC public school one year for each year loan monies are received.  The application is available on the CERRA web site at www.cerra.org/teachingFellows with a deadline of November 1st.  See Mrs. Carter for details!

 

 

Go to www.TuitionFundingSources.com to access a scholarship database as well as college and career information.  This service is available for our students free of charge through Pepsi-Cola. 

 

 

If you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a college freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. You may do this at the end of your junior year.  In order to register, you may go on-line to www.ncaaclearinghouse.net.

In partnership with USC-Aiken, USC-Salkehatchie is offering a B.S. degree in Elementary Education.  In partnership with USC-Columbia, they are offering a B.S. in Nursing and Technology Support and Training Management. 

 

 

Federal law requires all men living in the US to register within a month of their 18th birthday for the Selective Service. Registering keeps you eligible for college loans, government jobs, and driver's license renewals in most states. Register online at www.sss.gov or pick up a registration card at your local post office.

 

 

Lander University has added an accredited program in Athletic Training. They also offer a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and have a dual degree Engineering program with Clemson University.

New college applications will be available in the guidance office after September 10th.  Narrow your list of colleges and apply early!

 

Many colleges require recommendations from teachers, counselors, etc.  When you ask someone for a recommendation, you need to allow at least a week for them to complete it.  You may want to give them a copy of your resume or accomplishments and any additional forms. 

 

The US Senate Youth Program is a highly selective, competitive program offered to juniors and seniors who currently hold an elected office and are interested in political leadership.  Students must take an exam to initially qualify.  The top thirty scorers will write an essay under secure conditions and the top delegates will be selected in early December.  Interested students should contact Mrs. Carter as soon as possible.  Registration must be completed by October 1st.
