Information for Juniors

Colleton Medical Center is
accepting applications for students ages 15-18 to participate in their
volunteer program. Volunteers are expected to work at least four
hours per week for an 8 week period in different areas of the hospital.
Interested students need to see Mrs. Carter for more details and an
application. |

All Juniors will take
the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) on
Wednesday, February 10th, 8:00 AM until 12 Noon in the Media
Center. This is a helpful tool for career exploration. The
guidance staff will assist in the interpretation of results when the
score reports are received.

The 2010 Washington
Youth Tour through Coastal Electric Cooperative will be June
12-17. Eligible students must be juniors with at least a 3.0 GPA.
Students must submit an application as well as a letter of
recommendation from a teacher or community leader. An interview is
also required. Interested juniors can pick up an application from
Mrs. Carter.
Deadline is March 1st.

SPRING VISITATION DAYS
for Juniors: Converse College-April 16; Presbyterian College-April
17; Furman University-April 17; Anderson University-April 23; Winthrop
University-April 24; College of Charleston-April 17; Francis
Marion-April 17. Campus tours are available at most college
campuses throughout the year. Information can usually be found on
the college websites. If you need help scheduling a visit, drop by
the guidance office.

If
you intend to participate in Division I or II athletics as a college
freshman, you must register and be certified by the NCAA
Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse. You should do this at the end of
your junior year. In order to register, go on-line to www.eligibilitycenter.org.
Copies of the 2009-10 Guide for the College-Bound Student Athlete
are available in the guidance office or can be downloaded at the above

The
May 1st SAT will be at Colleton County High School. The
registration deadline is March 25th. The deadline for the June 5th
SAT is April 29th. ALL Juniors need to take the SAT by the
end of the school year!!!

All Juniors are encouraged to attend the College Ed-Op program at
the National Guard Armory on Tuesday, October 13th from 1:00-2:00.
We will go by bus from CPA to the armory. Students must return
permission slips to the office. The
purpose of Ed-Op is to provide an opportunity for high school juniors
and seniors to be exposed to the many types of post-secondary
educational opportunities.

The PSAT (Preliminary
Scholastic Aptitude Test) will be administered on Wednesday, October
14th to all 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. The test will be
administered during the school day at CPA. Students must be
present in order to take this test-there is no make-up test available.
Students who take the PSAT will receive a free personalized college
planning kit online when they receive their scores.

The United States
Senate hosts Academy Day on Saturday, September 12, 2009 from 10:00 AM
until 12:00 PM at the National Advocacy Center in Columbia.
Students can learn more about our nation's service academies, including
the US Air Force Academy, US Coast Guard, US Merchant Marines, US
Military Academy, and the US Naval Academy. See Mrs. Carter to
register, if interested.

institutions is available through South Carolina Independent Colleges
and Universities, Inc. at www.scicu.org.
This guide has excellent information on private schools, financial aid,
and scholarships. Check it out!

Duke University will
hold an Open house on Saturday, September 12th from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM on
the Duke campus. For additional information, go to www.admissions.duke.edu.

Hilton Head Christian
Academy will host a National Christian College Fair on Friday October
9th from 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM at their school. To see a list of the
participating colleges, go to www.nccf.us
and click on "National Christian College Fairs".

Juniors need to begin
thinking about college choices! There are some great web sites that can
help you narrow down your choices and find a school that is a perfect
fit for you! See the college and career section on this web site. |

Juniors are
encouraged to visit college campuses this year. A great way to “get a
feel” for a college is to visit. Mrs. Carter will be glad to assist
you in setting up a visit through the admissions office. |

Be prepared to begin
applying to the colleges of your choice at the beginning of your senior
year. Colleges are much more competitive than in the past. An early
application can make a difference! |
|
Federal law requires
all men living in the US to register within a month of their
18th birthday for the Selective Service. Registering keeps you
eligible for college loans, government jobs, and driver's
license renewals in most states. Register online at
www.sss.gov or pick up a
registration card at your local post office.
